A flight attendant and her boyfriend are forced to steal diamonds to clear a debt the latter owes a loan shark. But 40,000 feet in the air, the courier they need to steal from is swapped, and the plan goes amiss as terrorists hijack the plane. Will they succeed in their heist or fall prey to the hostage situation?
Heist and hijacking thrillers are both demanding genres to pull off. Director Ajay Singh ambitiously combines the two in Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, and does it with aplomb. The non-linear narrative is about a flight attendant Neha Grover (Yami Gautam), who falls in love with a passenger, Ankit Sethi (Sunny Kaushal), and the duo soon have a baby on the way. But a dubious deal with a loan shark lands Ankit in serious trouble, and to save his life, Neha agrees to help him steal a cache of diamonds on a flight from Al-Barkat to New Delhi.
Things start falling apart when the flight takes off, and the couple realises the courier did not board the plane. When you think the challenge will be to find the person among all the passengers, the real trouble begins when the aircraft is hijacked. Their perfect plan foiled, Neha and Ankit need to keep improvising to lay their hands on the diamonds, outsmarting the dreaded terrorists. This premise keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the film’s 110 minutes of runtime, including a big twist.
The tight grip on direction keeps the ride engaging even when the screenplay by Shiraz Ahmed and Amar Kaushik turns choppy intermittently, especially in the second half. The fast pace and thrill add to the intrigue that Gianni Giannelli’s cinematography and Charu Thakkar’s taut editing further enhance. Besides the treatment and narrative, the lead pair, Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal, keep you interested with their fine performances. Yami acts well as a terrified flight attendant trying to put up a brave front and help passengers. The quick turn of her expressions from emotional or distressed to no-nonsense is especially laudable. Sunny, as her businessman beau who does everything he can to get the diamonds, is convincing. The film also stars Sharad Kelkar as an investigative officer and Indraneil Sengupta as the flight marshal. Both actors deliver good performances, though one would have liked to see more of Indraneil.
Ketan Sodha’s background score heightens the drama with its gritty sound. Composed and sung by Vishal Mishra, Jaaniye is a melodious duet featuring Rashmeet Kaur.
